A Spongy Sponge

I have failed to get through to the semi finals of the Cambridge Bake Off.

If I had lost marks because the judges had deemed my cake a gloopy mess I might have taken it on the chin... but no... only 4 out of 10 for texture because my sponge cake was too spongy! My dreams of an alternative career have been dashed.

But at least I got a cookbook for my efforts.

I hope you're not too disappointed, we all know your cakes are delish.

  4. Well that has to go down as a classic comment of the ridiculous kind. Even if they didn't like the texture, "too spongy" was not the right phrase for a sponge cake. Hope you still got to enjoy it though

  5. Shame - you can be our top baker any day though!

  6. Your cake looked perfect to me. Nicely moist - I hate dry sponges. I wouldn't take too much notice of this result, especially if you are serious about an alternative career. There must be plenty of women making cakes professionally with no qualification other than that they make excellent cakes.

  8. How daft, I would have thought that the clue was in the name - 'sponge' cakes should be spongy else they'd be called 'dense' cakes or 'solid' cakes! I know which I'd prefer!

  14. The judges are all crazy - how could you not win!!! Your cake looks just right to me - what else is a sponge supposed to be other than spongy! Cheers.

  15. That really made me laugh: they could have come up with a better description. Too spongy sounds a bit odd really. It looks delicious though and that is what a cake should be.

  17. Hi Gina I think you were really up against the time restriction...one hour isn't enough to bake the ckae, let it cool and add the filling.

  21. Was it the cake that was too spongey or the judges brains? Sorry you didn't get through, but your cakes always look fantastically delicious x

  24. How can a sponge cake be too spongy? Doesn't make sense to me! Pooh on them, my dear. That's like an angel cake being too light, or a chocolate cake being too chocolaty! Crazy.
    I'll bet it tasted divine!
Such a shame there's nutbars on the judging panel.

  26. Oh Gina, only just caught up with my blog reading! So sorry, but I'd just like to say I'm prepared to eat any of your reject cakes, as a favour to a friend.
You should have taken it and shoved it in the Judge's face. Or even better, Paul Hollywood's.
